First my old and faithful computer, a PC Pentium 133, and then a Roland JV1080 expander with its orchestral extension, as well as a Yamaha A3000 sampler for some solo sounds. No, no, on the contrary. Rather, I come from a "rock" musical milieu (in fact I'm a bassist) but I have also operated in the electronic music milieu for some time, which helped me a lot to understand the way machines work. For now, we're still waiting for John Howe's recently-requested illustrations ; and we're still looking for a distributor. But it moves forward... slowly but surely. :-)

Hi François ! First of all, thanks for your interest in my music ! I confess Peter Jackson's film is rater fine. Visually speaking, it's formidable. Unfortunately, I couldn't find back Tokiens' soul and couldn't link [Translator note : or tie?] to characters... especially Sam who's my favourite character. Apart from that, as many Tokien fans, I deplore the changes and the cuts brought to the story. But setting oneself to the LOTR was a impossible task that Jackson could go through with a certain brilliance. As he repeated many times, it's "his" vision of the novel, more centered on action and adventure that mine, but quite as respectable ; -) Regarding the music, I really find it very nice, in the way it sticks perfectly to the images, but not exceptional as one could expect, as well as Star Wars or even Braveheart... The examples are numerous ;-) I remain persuaded that a Jerry Goldsmith or a John Williams would have been more able to bring an epic breath, with all necessary poetry, to Tolkien's account.

Malheureusement je n'ai pas retrouvé l'âme de Tolkien et je ne suis pas parvenu a m'attacher aux personnages... notamment a Sam qui est mon personnage préféré. Sinon, comme nombre d'admirateurs de Tolkien, je déplore les changements et les coupures apportés a l'histoire. Mais s'attaquer au SdA était une gageure que Jackson a su relever avec un certain brio. Comme il l'a précisé maintes fois, c'est "sa" vision du roman, plus centrée sur l'action et l'aventure que la mienne, mais tout aussi respectable ;-) Concernant la musique, je la trouve vraiment tres bien, dans le sens ou elle colle parfaitement aux images, mais pas exceptionnelle comme on était en droit de l'attendre, au meme titre que Star Wars ou meme Braveheart... Les exemples sont nombreux ;-) Je reste persuadé qu'un Jerry Goldsmith ou un John Williams auraient été plus a meme d'apporter un souffle épique, avec toute la poésie nécessaire, au récit de Tolkien.

I myself am a musician (I'm a jazz player, saxophones and clarinet) and am a budding composer. I've worked a lot in studios and have knowledge of a lot of electronic equipment, but I'm not familiar with your Roland JV1080 expander. Could you tell me a bit more about it? For instance, is that what supplies you with the instrument sounds you use? Any info at all would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for your kind words. The Roland JV1080 became kind of reference in recording studios all over the world. It had very interessant expansion cards (above all the orchestral one). However it isn't built anymore cause it has been replaced by new machines much more powerful such as XV 5080 or XV 5050. But, to tell the truth, I've changed all my equipment a few months ago and I won't use it anymore in my next compositions. I work now with Emagic's Logic Audio Platinum (as always) and EXS24 (kind of sampler in Logic Audio). I've also purchased the "Advanced Orchestra" cd-roms, the symphonic samples made by Peter Siedlaczek. I think the result will be more realistic.
